Journalism Workshop

The “Beyond the Headlines” fellowship programme aimed to provide media practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of trafficking in persons (TIP) and enhance their reporting by adopting a trauma-sensitive and human-centred approach.

The Fellows were tasked with producing one news piece by the end of the fellowship programme, incorporating knowledge gained from five masterclasses. Out of the 16 news pieces produced by the fellows, it reached a total of more than 14 million readers.

Meet The Fellows

Iqbal Fatkhi

Iqbal Fatkhi is the Editor-in-Chief of Cilisos Media and a former Digital Content Producer at BFM Radio. Iqbal is a prominent voice on current affairs, particularly in the realms of politics and human rights. Widely recognized for his explainer videos reaching millions of views, Iqbal has garnered over 100,000 followers across Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok where his engaging yet informed style strikes a balance between education and entertainment.

Iylia Marsya

Iylia Marsya is a multimedia journalist at The New Straits Times where she produces both in writing and video-form for the Special Reports Team – NST Focus. She had a brief year-long stint at The Star Newspaper as a general desk reporter. Marsya formerly ran her campus news portal, IIUMToday as the Managing Editor and a host at IIUM TV. IIUM Today and IIUMTV are the official campus media for IIUM.

Faye Kwan

Faye Kwan is a multi-platform journalist who has worked in radio, broadcast, and online news organisations. She currently hosts Astro AWANI, It’s About YOUth, a talk show featuring young Malaysians and their take on current affairs while contributing to the network’s prime-time English news programme AWANI Tonight and producing special reports for its digital platforms. She has covered major events including the multiple leadership transitions in Malaysia over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the country’s recent 15th general election, and held exclusive interviews with political leaders such as former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Joshua Low

Joshua Low is a Forced Migration Researcher at New Naratif, a Malaysian–based online journalism platform and self-described independent media outlet that publishes content on Southeast Asian current affairs. He writes in-depth research articles on forced migration issues in Southeast Asia to be used to educate, engage, and empower Southeast Asians.
